Klaus Windamier was born in the year I.S. 442 in the City of L'Renouille, capital of the former Highland Kingdom. The son of the late Kiba Windamier, Commanding General of Highland's Third Royal Company, and Lady Eliza, a Harmonian noblewoman, Klaus demonstrated an exceptional intellect in his early years, though his physical frailty threatened to derail any hopes of following his father's footsteps into the Royal Highland Army. However, his family's connections allowed him to attend the prestigious Soledt Academy of Military Science in Crystal Valley, Harmonia, where he lived and studied for several years. Upon his graduation, he returned home to take the position of Chief Tactician for the Third Royal Company, serving under his father the general.

The outbreak of what would later be called the Dunan Unification War in early I.S. 460 saw much of the Royal Army deployed into Jowston territory, and the Third Company was among the divisions that saw action in "Mad Prince" Luca Blight's invasion of Eastern Muse. Though neither father nor son Windamier were enthusiastic about either the invasion itself or the brutality of Prince Luca's tactics, they nonetheless obeyed orders, as both had pledged fealty to Agares Blight, the Highland king who had transferred command of the Royal Army to his son.

The Third did not play a significant role in the Royal Army's invasion of the Jowston capital of Muse City, or in its early efforts against the fledgling "New State Alliance" based across the lake at Northwind Castle, though the Windamiers were soon tasked with bringing the Jowston principality of Two River into the Highland fold. Entering the city under the guise of negotiating a peace treaty, Kiba and Klaus offered the plenipotentiary, Lord Makai, terms which would give Highland control of Two River's kobold district while leaving the human district under independent rule. Makai initially agreed to the terms, prompting General Ridley Wizen of the kobolds to break ties with Two River's government. The Third then attacked Two River, aiming to take advantage of the internal strife, but the presence of New State Alliance leader Lord Riou in the city compelled the three races to unite against their Highland aggressors, forcing the Windamiers to retreat.

The Third was next deployed in an effort to attack the New State Alliance on its home turf; first taking the border town of Radat, then the City of Southwind, the Third Company advanced on the State headquarters, with the aim of destroying the insurgency in one swift stroke by capturing or killing Lord Riou. Klaus' strategy, while competent, was nonetheless outdone by the efforts of Lord Shu of the Alliance. When the Fourth Royal Highland, acting as an auxiliary force, was ordered to retreat, Kiba & Klaus were left at the mercy of their State captors. Both father and son requested to be executed upon their capture, despite Lords Riou & Shu's efforts to convince them to defect, but a message bearing the news that Luca Blight had ascended to the Highland throne convinced Klaus that King Agares had been usurped, prompting both to join the fight against Luca, and later Jowy Atreides' Highland.

General Kiba was killed during the Matilda campaign, the penultimate showdown of the war, and Klaus participated in the final campaign which saw the Alliance invade his native city of L'Renouille. Following the war, he serves first under Lord Chancellor Shu during the transitional period, and since I.S. 461, under Lady Teresa Wisemail of Greenhill – President of the Dunan Republic.
